Facilitating Community for Orphaned and Abandoned Children

Bandipur Children’s Home

Studying time

We are committed to providing a nurturing home, education, and future opportunities to orphaned or abandoned children in Nepal.

Working alongside a loving Nepali family who opened their hearts and their doors to these kids, we help provide shelter, quality education, and empowerment to the children, as they build their confidence and develop skills needed to transform their own lives, and shape their communities.

OUR STORY

Our partnership began in 2008, when we as honeymooners, (Marcie and Carmen Esau) met Dipak and Krishna (Christeena) Panthi. Over the years, a relationship of trust has grown into a partnership as we continue to collaborate in housing, mentoring and caring for orphaned or abandoned children in Nepal. While Dipak and Christeena operate the home in Nepal, we navigate the logistics of fundraising, financial treasury, and networking from Canada.

ONGOING NEEDS FOR ORPHANAGE

  • Educational tools, such as technology for distant learning in an area that is at high risk for contracting Covid-19, as the children continue their education on lock-down.

  • Support for transition to secondary education, as education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Secondary education is more expensive than we can currently accommodate with our organization.

  • Our property is built on a mountainside terrace, and during the rainy season the property sustains much damage from mudslides. We have ongoing financial needs for property repair. Currently the need is for construction of wooden stairs down the hillside to access the home, and to repair the buffalo shed that was destroyed in the last mudslide.

  • Prayer for protection for our children, as there are leopards from the nearby jungle that prey on children. Every year there are a few deaths of children in the town due to this. We want to join with the Children’s Home in prayer for protection for the health of all the children in the community who are at risk for contracting Covid-19, danger of being caught in mudslides, and prey by leopards.

  • Regular support is needed for the sponsorship of each child’s schooling, their clothes, food, and other resources.

KEY Activities

  • Facilitating housing and educational opportunities for 13 school-aged children.

  • Construction projects: repair of property following mudslides.

  • Addressing health needs of new intake children: such as malnutrition; as well as physical, emotional, and spiritual recovery from abuse.

  • Empowering young women to remain in school and avoid child marriages.

  • Providing economic opportunities for community members by hiring all staff locally.

Ministry Accomplishments to Date

  • Construction of the Children’s Home including the addition of the third floor. Continually updating the space; for example, installing flooring and area rugs to provide a home-like environment.

  • Maintaining food security within the context of local culture by renting out a nearby field for agricultural use.

  • Teaching critical life skills to all the children.

  • Working successfully with the local Women and Children’s District Welfare Committee and maintaining great rapport with the local government.

  • Completing primary education for all the children, and working closely with our team to brainstorm exit planning solutions for young adults.

  • Employing youth mentors for both the boys and the girls, completing monthly assessments related to the health and wellbeing of all the children.

  • Establishing a robust donor base in Canada, providing information and raising awareness about the ongoing challenges in a developing country such as Nepal.
